Le triste record du nombre de morts en Méditerrannée, Des élections inquiétantes aux USA, en Autriche, en Croatie, en France, en Allemagne, … …. Chers amis, Il est bien compliqué de nommer le réel sans que cela ne prenne des airs de catastrophe. Nous aurions aimé commencer cette année d’I-team avec plus de légèreté. Mais c’est dans cet état du monde qu’il nous faut trouver notre chemin. « Ce qui surviendra, nul ne le sait. Mais chacun comprend qu’il faudra, pour le percevoir, être calmes, divers, et exagérément libres. » nous propose Patrick Boucheron, historien.
En d’autres mots, Hugo parlait « d’étonner la catastrophe », Walter Benjamin de « se mettreau travers de la catastrophe lente à venir, qui est faite de continuations plus que desoudaines ruptures ». Ces mots cernent assez clairement notre ambition, ou plus justement notre état d’esprit, trouver des espaces communs de liberté, d’invention et d’étonnement. Par ces temps, il est également devenu commun de parler de bataille culturelle, ou de « guerre des consciences » comme le disait récemment Shiran Ben Abderrazak, lors des journées Europe créative « EuropeFabrique » du Relais (europefabrique.wordpress.com). Iteam se veut une halte pour reposer la conscience, ou plutôt pour que « demeure la possibilité d’une conscience », non pas seulement le siège « d’une pensée », mais bien celui d’une raison pratique, donnant toute latitude d’agir.
Décrire le monde, le réel. Les poètes s’y consacrent avec exactitude. Nous tenterons aussi, à notre manière, de nous y consacrer avec le même souci et d’approcher les contours d’un « récit européen de l’agir », et pourquoi pas d’essayer nous aussi d’être gaiement « exagérément libres ». Nous avons choisi comme propos général de cette année « See, Share Debate on the Edge ». Ce titre, qui volontairement sonne comme un programme, est né des échanges que nous avons eus avec Ekmel Ertan, notre ami d’Istanbul. Au cours de cette année, nous explorerons, depuis « les confins » géographiques, sociaux et culturels, les conditions d’une réinvention d’un récit européen libre, ouvert, confiant, et généreusement tourné vers les autres, vers l’Etat de droit et la démocratie. En attendant de commencer ensemble, à Sheffield, ce « voyage », nous avons ouvert un blog en ligne à partir de vendredi, (communiteam.eu), lieu des traces de ce parcours que nous commençons dans quelques semaines, avec pour le moment, quelques textes qui nous importent, quelques perspectives et positions singulières qui ouvrent, et beaucoup de place libre à faire respirer ensemble. Vous trouverez en pièces jointes, différents dossiers pratiques, nous vous remercions de les lire avec attention. Nous vous y présentons le fonctionnement pratique d’I-team (voyages, déroulement) et vous y demandons de préparer certaines choses pour la première semaine, particulièrement votre présentation. Vous pouvez joindre au Relais, Hélène ou Noémie, qui répondront à vos éventuelles questions. Voilà, nous sommes très impatients de commencer cette année avec vous. Nous vous retrouverons donc avec grand plaisir à Sheffield. A bientôt.

June: Brexit June : Brexit July: attacks August: coup d’etat in Turkeyand …. The sad record for the number of deaths in the Mediterranean Worrying elections in the USA, Austria, Croatia, France, Germany, … …. Dear friends, It is difficult to talk about reality without taking on an atmosphere of catastrophe. We would like to have started this I-Team year in a lighter vein. But it is in the state of the world that we need to make our way. “Nobody knows what will happen. But everyone understands that, in order to understand it, we need to be calm, diverse and exceptionally free”, suggests the historian Patrick Boucheron. In different words, Hugo spoke of «disrupting catastrophe”, Walter Benjamin of “getting through catastrophe that approaches slowly and builds from of continuation, rather than sudden fracture”. These words quite clearly define our ambition or, more accurately, our mindset: to find common spaces of freedom, invention and amazement. It has also become common in these times to speak of a cultural battle, or of a “war of consciousness”, as Shiran Ben Abderrazak recently said during ‘EuropeFabric’: the Relais Creative Europe Days (europefabrique.wordpress.com).
I-Team wants to be a stopping place where we can reposition consciousness, or rather “what possibility of consciousness remains”: not just a centre of thinking, but indeed one of practical reasoning that provides every opportunity for action. Describing the world, the reality. Poets address this finely. We too, in our own way, will try to address it with the same care, both to examine more closely the outlines of a “European narrative for action”, and – why not? - to try in our own way to be cheerfully “exceptionally free”. We have chosen as our general subject for the year «See, Share Debate on the Edge» This title, which purposely sounds like a programme, has been born of discussions we have had with Ekmel Ertan, our friend in Istanbul. In the course of this year we will explore from the geographical, social and cultural ‘outer edges’, the conditions for reinventing a European narrative that is free, open, trusting and turns with generosity towards others, towards the rule of law and democracy. In advance of setting out together on this “voyage” in Sheffield, we have opened a blog, online from Friday, (communiteam.eu), as a space for evidence of this journey that we are starting in a few weeks’ time with, for the moment, a few texts that matter to us, a few unusual perspectives and views that open things up, and plenty of free space to breathe life into together. You will find attached various information documents. We would like you to read these carefully. They describe how I-Team will work (journeys, progress) and ask you to prepare certain things for the first week, in particular your presentation. If you have any further questions, Hélène or Noémie at Relais will be happy to answer these. There it is. Visit 1 : Barnsley
Another large town in South Yorkshire, located halfway between Leeds and Sheffield. Population (2011) 231,221 Known for coal mining most of the pits were in surrounding villages. All the mines in the borough are now closed; Goldthorpe was the last to close in 1994. Wire, linen and glass making were also major industries only glass making remains company still operating.
Major companies today include: • online retailer ASOS • largest cake bakery in Europe (Premier.Foods) • Bottle makers (Rexam.Glass) • Kitchens (Symphony) • Replacement windows (many) • Food.processing (many)
Most new businesses based on industrial parks outside town centre. Many built on reclaimed former coal mine sites. Town centre now moving towards a service economy. Unemployment now below the national average. Many people on incapacity benefit – ex.miners.

Visit 2 : Burngreave and City Centre
Burngreave is an inner city district north of the city centre of Sheffield (pop..c..27,000). Seated within the much larger parliamentary constituency of Brightside and Hillsborough. The quarter started to develop in the later c 19th. Before this, it was mostly covered by Burnt Greave. wood Grimesthorpe. Lane runs through. Burngreave : an ancient road along the Roman Rig, a man made defensive ridge (probably built by the Celtic Brigantes tribe).
In both 1916 and 1940 it was heavily bombed causing much damage to homes and businesses and killing and injuring many people. After WWII housing renewal had a major impact on the area. Whole neighbourhoods were moved to other parts of the city and old substandard housing was demolished. This changed the character of the area quite dramatically and resulted in many people moving away, never to return. The disruption that many people experienced at this time also affected the sense of community and identity of the area.
After WWII, a desperate need for labour in Sheffield to rebuild the cityand its industries Burngreave became home to many new immigrants arriving from the Caribbean, Pakistan and Yemen. Later they brought their families to join them and became part of the local community This was the beginnings of the multicultural community that is Burngreave today.
BUT… In Burngreave cemetery is a grave of Sultan Mohomed an Indian man killed in a local colliery accident in 1923. Evidence that some Somali people settled in the area during the 1930s.
Since the 1970s the area has also become home to refugees from Chile, Somalia, Eritrea, Iraq, Sudan, and several other countries. More recently, Slovakian people have come in search of work. Burngreave is one of the most ethnically diverse neighbourhoods in Sheffield. This cultural richness is reflected in the many languages spoken locally and the variety of food on offer in local restaurants and shops. Industrial decline in the 1980s and 90s in South Yorkshire took its toll. High levels of unemployment again resulted in poverty and a general decline in the appearance of the area.
Burngreave is now experiencing a change in fortune, partly from the determination of local residents to stop the spiral of decay and bring about changes.A huge government funded regeneration programme, Burngreave. New Deal for Communities, has been initiated to bring prosperity back to the area. In late 2011, a Tesco Extra opened on Savile Street, nearby.Spital Hill, the traditional shopping centre of the area. In 2013 and 2014 there was reported unrest between Roma Slovak and Yemeni residents in the Page Hall area.
